As Good as It Gets
is a nostalgic, weird, and oddly touching song that fans of soulful indie artists like Clairo, Thee Sacred Souls and Dominic Fike will enjoy.
An excerpt of its quirky music video has attracted over 300,000 views on TikTok.
Brooding, gritty, yet tinged with optimism, As Good as It Gets marks a new chapter in the songbook of Stevie Matthews. This release follows his 2021 EP, Going Home, whose debut music video garnered over 35,000 views.
“As Good as It Gets is about the balance of light and dark,” says Stevie.
The lyrics are doubtful, even nihilistic, before they resolve into an angelic choir; silky harmonies carry growling lead vocals; trombones stab, flutes soar. Even the album artwork, a high-contrast, black-and-white photograph by Joshua Loring, seems to capture a moment that is both sardonic and sincere.
Despite its nuances, As Good as It Gets refuses to take itself too seriously. The song’s whimsical music video features a rubber worm on a string (named Weebly) who serenades an audience of plastic bugs from atop a cardboard stage.
“I wanted a worm to sing it because I felt like one when I wrote it,” Stevie says.
As Good as It Gets was relased on April 4, 2025. It was produced by Jimmy Sale (something), engineered and pre-mixed by Nick Waters (who plays drums, bass and guitar on the recording), and mastered by Mat Leffler-Schulman (Jon Batiste, Dan Deacon, Queen Sheba, to name a few).
